Our story

Founded in 2018 by Matt Hosburgh as a side hustle, uMercs was born out of a desire to secure small and mid-sized businesses that were increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks. At the time, enterprise-level cybersecurity was accessible only to organizations with substantial security budgets, leaving smaller businesses exposed. Matt, driven by the need to offer a more inclusive solution and a yearning for freedom from the traditional corporate grind, dedicated countless late nights and minimal resources to build uMercs into the robust company it is today.

From its humble beginnings, uMercs has evolved into a powerhouse in cybersecurity, offering advanced solutions tailored to businesses of all sizes. Our mission is clear: to empower organizations to fight their digital battles effectively so they can focus on running their businesses without fear of cyber threats. Matt Hosburgh

CEO / Founder

Matt has over two decades of experience working in a variety of industries and verticals. From Local and State Government, US Government, Oil & Gas, and Financial Services industries, to the freelance and start-up world. Matt brings a breadth of security experience to the table from both offensive and defensive security angles.

Matt holds a graduate degree from the SANS Technology Institute, and maintains several GIAC
Certifications, to include the GSE.

Carter's professional journey is a testament to his resilience and adaptability, marked by a diverse background in the Insurance, Mortgage, and Entertainment Industries. His trajectory took a sharp turn when a cyber criminal orchestrated a devastating attack on his personal finances, leaving him with no choice but to embark on a mid-career shift into the realm of information security.

Carter holds a degree in Communications from Wingate University.

Penetration Tester 

Maya Erickson is a cybersecurity professional with over 18 years of experience in the Army, where she began as a military police officer and later served as an Intelligence Analyst. Her military background, marked by leadership roles in security and fitness training, transitioned into a civilian career in law enforcement, where she specialized in human trafficking investigations. Now focused on cybersecurity, Maya has earned certifications in CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+, alongside coursework in Risk Management and Cyber Defense, bringing her strategic expertise and dedication to safeguarding digital environments.

Maya holds a degree in Criminal Justice from Winona State University.
